Well…so the experiment with buddypress and wordpress forum server is over. Neither one was really flexible enough or useful enough to fit my needs, so I’ve gone ahead and installed a full-fledged forum for the Scriveners artists group. The grand opening of the group was Saturday, though there have been a few mice poking around in odd corners before that. I’ve been working on the thing for a couple of weeks, tweaking this and that and swearing at the smilies, which refused to work properly (I’ve killed the smilies and buried them in the basement). The membership grows by a few people each day. I’m hoping that a few more musicians stop by, and am expectant also that we can find a few people who are interested in different artforms that would like to talk about that. Textile and fabric arts, visual arts, everyone’s welcome. Cooks…the idea is that over time the community will collaborate on things as they build relationships.

We’ll have a few projects too…like some podcasting preparatory to working on the massive Children of the Atom project from last summer, and maybe a graphic novel or webcomic. Right now we have some people who are members of various writing sites, and a few other folks from musical and other communities. The future looks bright.

Scriveners also has a Facebook page, if you’re on Facebook and would like to stop by. It’s a public forum, with the General Discussion area open to people who aren’t yet members.

New Staff

The new owner has implemented a return to the site guidelines originally compiled by Chrispian, the site founder, and has added a number of new staff members. We hope you’ll join us in welcoming them.

Ash Somers heads up the Poetry and NaNoWriMo boards, Ilasir Maroa is now managing the Writing Discussion and Published Poetry sections, Like A Fox runs the RPG and WF Challenges areas, and co-manages the Literary Maneuvers board, one of the four overseen by moderan, who also works with the Lyrics forum, the brand-new New Media board, and the new Publishing section. Sam W and JosephB ably supervise the Writers’ Workshop. JosephB also manages the Fiction forum. Longtime member and recent returnee vangoghsear is the moderator of the Scripts forum.

Not quite new as they are retained from the previous administration are Farror, Foxee, Hawke, Joseph B, and Olly Buckle, plus site administrator Pawn. Olly Buckle received a promotion to Moderator from his previous position as Mentor, just previous to the sale and renewal of the site.

New Global Moderator alanmt should also be named to this list, as well as new admins Baron and Galivanting.

Pawn has been working steadily to upgrade the site and add new features and flexibility, and the rest of the staff have been working to preserve the atmosphere of camaraderie.

It should be noted that staff assignments change from time to time. Please consult the board for a current listing.

By Lady S.

Overcast sky throws shades of grey,

where freezing waves hiss and share

their memories, along Bantry Bay.

With an icy bite in salty air,

the spray rains down from overhead,

a watery veil of grieving.

The sea gives up her bloated dead -

departed but never leaving.

Tangled feelings plague frozen thought,

like rotting seaweed on the shore

of rebel country, where men fought

while dreams of liberty and more

were written into history.

A sister dies, another weeps

and murmurs of the mystery

of chance and of the hungry deep.

Dispassionate, the ocean foams

and cares not for those left to grieve;

the wind brings voices, heard to moan

their anguish that they cannot leave

the water’s chill embrace, or walk

again along the windswept sand.

Trapped spirits in the ocean talk

through fickle waves along the strand.

Literary Maneuvers Contest Winner

The Last Bus

by moderan

There was a bike in the rack on the front of the bus. Rodrigo noticed it as he boarded, and lusted after it. Shiny and new, silver spokes gleaming, blue paint, 15 or 18 speeds.

“Man, glad I made it,” he said to the driver. “No more buses tonight. It’d suck to be stranded.”

The driver nodded and pulled the bus away from the curb. Rodrigo moved on down the aisle.

He took a seat midway between the reeking drunk behind the driver’s area and the rayon-clad working-women near the side door, and thought about how easy things would be with a bike.

“Yeah man,” he said to himself under his breath. “That’s 35 extra a month. I could eat lunch with that money. No more monthly bus pass.”

The bus passed by a Whataburger and his stomach rumbled in recognition of the smell coming in the window. He hadn’t eaten since the previous evening.

Two senior citizens got on at the next stop.

“I wonder who’s bike it is?” he thought, scanning the other passengers surreptitiously.

A couple of wannabe ‘bangers in the back, headphones on, jamming to the clubfooted beats of hip-hop, the waitresses and clerks and cashiers, some bluehairs out too late.

Another banger got on, sat down with the others, exchanging mysterious gestures.

Rodrigo gazed at his reflection in the side window. Too much frown, hairline heading for the border, the face of a working stiff. Life hadn’t been kind.

“I shoulda stayed in school,” he remarked. But he hadn’t, and the series of menial jobs that had been his life didn’t pay much.

“You never know, though. Things can change,” he continued, sotto voce.

The drunk got off.

“I deserve a break,” Rodrigo told the golden arches as they went by.

Most of the ladies and the three bangers got off by the cemetery. He watched the women waiting for the light to change. The ‘bangers headed into the graveyard. No doubt some stones would get turned over.

That left two waitresses and the seniors.

Three stops to go.

“Man, it’d be great to have a bike,” he thought.

The seniors got off at University.

“Can’t be the bus driver’s. Someone must have forgotten it.”

The waitresses got off. He waited to see if one of them claimed the bike. They didn’t.

“I shouldn’t take it. It belongs to someone. But I need it so bad.”

His stop.

Rodrigo exited, caught the driver’s eye, inclined his head toward the rack. The driver looked away, doing his best Sergeant Schultz.

“I hope this don’t come back on me,” Rodrigo said, pedaling away into the darkness on his new mountain bike.

Some words from the new administration

Baron

Baron, as the new owner of WF how have you found the transition so far?

There have been some teething problems but I think it’s been pretty painless. I’m glad to see the site on the upward trend again, with more activity and a more positive attitude.

What do you hope to see in the future for writingforums.com?

I’d like to see the site grow to the kind of level it was at a couple of years ago. I see WF as a place for writers of all levels of ability to come together to share, teach and learn. I’d like to see it a healthy workshop environment for teens to the Olly and Ox age level.

As a writer, where does your focus lie? Is there anywhere that people can view or buy your work?

I don’t really think of any kind of focus or aim. Writing is something that I do, that I’ve always done, and what draws my attention or what excites me changes on a day to day basis. I’ve done some collaborations with bands and some theatrical work and performance gives me greater satisfaction than seeing my work in print.

Over the years I’ve had novels and poetry published in the mainstream using pseudonyms. I now publish with a cooperative venture using my own name. A group of writers and visual artists have set up our own publishing label using Lulu as a printer and distributor. Work is available on our own website or through Amazon and other online retailers.

What do you do when not writing?

Recreationally, I spend as much time as I can with my family. To earn a crust, I’m a photographer, working mainly in the fashion and music industries.

Pawn

Just for the benefit of our readers and members, what are your personal goals and visions for writingforums.com?

I’d like to see the site renamed to penguinforums.com, and restyled in tasteful black and white. In place of blogs we’ll have bogs (for our marsh-dwelling penguins), articles will be replaced with icicles (obviously), and it will be rather quiet, owing to the difficulty of typing with flippers.

In all seriousness though, what I want for WF is to be nothing less than the largest, most active, most open, most beautiful, best featured, best organised, best staffed writing forum on the internet.

What are your specialties as a writer? Is there anywhere that people can view or buy your work?

As you can no doubt tell, I specialize in replying to interview questions.

What do you do when not writing?

I do web, print and media design under the name Brick Media Lab. When not quaffing Earl Grey tea, I collect Penguin Books, some of which end up on my blog, Today’s Penguins.

Galivanting

Just for the benefit of our readers and members, what are your personal goals and visions for writingforums.com?

Personally, I want to see WF back to what it was when I first joined when I was 17. I couldn’t watch this site die when it has offered so many people so much as still can.

What are your specialties as a writer? Is there anywhere that people can view or buy your work?

I write poetry 99.9% exclusively. No, I have never really given an attempt at being published, so right here is the best place to view.

What do you do when not writing?

When I am not writing, I am an unemployed chef and a “aquariumscaper” (people pay me to decorate their fish tanks)

Thoughts from longtime staff members:

Olly Buckle

Just for the benefit of our readers and members, what are your personal goals and visions for writingforums.com?

I am not one for personal visions or goals. the here and now is enough. Reading and writing go hand in hand, and my aim is encouraging the thoughtful and critical use of both, whilst enjoying it. How I go about that has to adapt and change to retain validity. On the other hand there is also a place for the familiar.

What are your specialties as a writer? Is there anywhere that people can view or buy your work?

I have no specialities, in fact I tend to jump from one thing to another, songs, poems, short stories, factual articles. I have work on associated content and you can see me doing a couple of pieces on youtube, Google Olly Buckle.

What do you do when not writing?

I have a chronic immune system condition which stops me doing as much as I once did, but I still garden and our youngest daughter has not quite left home yet, so I am still a Dad for another year or so. A guitarist friend and I are trying to work up an act and I tell traditional stories.

JosephB

Just for the benefit of our readers and members, what are your personal goals and visions for writingforums.com?

Life events inspired me to write, probably a little later than most folks. I first posted at WF on a whim, and in doing so, discovered the little thrill that comes when people tell you that they enjoy what you’ve written. I’ve always loved reading and books, but my passion for writing took root and grew at WF. I’d like to think that anyone who joins might have that same experience, and I’d like to be part of making it happen.

What are your specialties as a writer? Is there anywhere that people can view or buy your work?

I mostly write about relationships, mainly between men and women in the context of every-day living, and all the problems they often deal with – infidelity, addiction, grief etc.

I love writing short stories, but I’m also working on a novel. (Who isn’t?) I also enjoy writing poetry. It really gets the gears turning. I’m just now getting around to submitting some of the stories I’ve posted here to a few literary magazines, but so far, not takers.

What do you do when not writing?

I work as a graphic designer and creative director, and when I’m not doing that, I like to write, play and record music, create art in various mediums, cook, watch movies and hang out with friends. But mostly, I like to spend time with my wife and children. I’m especially trying to take full advantage of the relatively brief window when kids actually want to spend time with their parents.

Advertising

Writing Forums members and staff can now advertise their offsite projects in the new Promotions section.

This was the week that was…busy.

I had intended to get the first few chapters of Fallen Earring written and online, and install and check out buddypress, preparatory to a outpouring of members from the New Writing Media group at ning and a corresponding exodus from writingforums.com, including myself.

Instead, I find myself as a forum moderator at WF, overseeing the traffic in the groups Literary Maneuvers (biweekly writing excursions), Lyrics (traffic is up and there are some fragile egos), and New Media (just beginning to get going). I’m still maintaining the Scriveners group here, which has moved to an onsite forum, but the focus has widened from simple New Media to all-inclusive arts discussion and networking, with an eye toward mixed-media collaboration. Artists from CG pros to fly-tiers are welcome to stop by and discuss their craft.

As some of you know, ning.com has decided to go to a paid service. The creator of New Writing Media at ning has decided not to continue, citing the broken-trust issue that has made me decide to let the Gernsback Continuum languish as well. The New Media area at writingforums.com was created specifically to attract and house discussions by the members of NWM, and Brewster has been kind enough to mention that on his forum.

The Children of the Atom project is being revived and will be underway soon at Scriveners. Those of you who were previously involved are more than welcome to continue. If you’re reading this, stop on by. I’ll be getting in touch with you on an individual basis as well.

I’d also like to say a public vote of thanks to writer Lin Robinson for his work on the New Media section.

Finally installed a forum app that works…something called the WP Forum Server, a “fork” of the WP Forum app I used here last year. It doesn’t fight with buddypress or the other plugins, widgets, apps, and whatnot that infest this place.
Great stuff…and for lunch I got to try one of them newfangled Burger King steakburger thingies. The sandwich was decent. I like me some A1 on my burger, but those fries. That potato dust or whatever they spray on those things is just plain wrong. Shoulda bartered for the onion rings.
The walk was great though. The prickly pear flowers are starting to bloom, it isn’t too hot yet, and there isn’t so much traffic on a Sunday. It’s a little over a mile to the shopping center that has the BK Lounge, with a truly awesome view of the Catalinas.
And the servers at writingforums.com are being migrated, which is good news for those of us who have suffered through delays and outages for the last couple of years. I’m holding out hope that the ownership change will be a good thing. I’ve been having a decent dialogue with the new owner, and am hopeful also that it’s a good sign, that neither of us is the asshole that we took each other for. Probably we are, but if we can work together anyway, that doesn’t matter.
Changes, changes…surely few people besides me give a hoot about this stuff, but I felt I oughta put it out there.

No, not batting practice, though my beloved Cubbies could use some. I’ve added buddypress functionality to this blog, in anticipation of the imminent death of the Gernsback Continuum, as ning is discontinuing free services, and of the exodus of folks from writingforums.com as that site’s sale appears imminent.

I don’t get along with the prospective owner. Too bad because I like the site as is, and made an offer to buy it myself last year, to no avail. But it is what it is. Other folks don’t get along with the prospective owner either, and they’re more than welcome to come and discuss the state of affairs here.

This is a step in the direction of establishing a new writing discussion site. A baby step, but that’s how it’s going to proceed. It’s nigh unto impossible to administrate a discussion forum by oneself. I’ve tried it a couple times, and it hasn’t worked out. Need more people willing to do the gruntwork, start and contribute to discussions, et cetera.

Soooo, buddypress, a relatively new plugin to wordpress. It’s really more of a social platform than a discussion forum app. Users can establish their own groups, not unlike the ning model, and interact on that basis. Fora can be included in the groups.

There are some bugs…for example the avatar upload function doesn’t work properly. The avatars upload to a folder in the wordpress installation and buddypress can’t see them there. No doubt that’ll get fixed someday. I’m not going to start screwing around with the source code and adding 777 or whatever to line 5. I’d much rather write prose or music than code, thank you very much.

I am just trying to provide a home for weirdos who want to converse like adults in an unsupervised manner. We’ll eventually have a domain to call our own, but for now we’re here at Scriveners@Planet Moderan. If any of you reading this on the various rss feeds want to, you can join S@PM at register.

For now, all we have are “welcome” discussions, but that’ll change as I work on the site.

I’ll be moving some of the content from the Gernsback site here as well.

Things have been more than a little stressful of late. I won’t go into detail, but there have been a lot of things happening, only some of which are good.

One of the ways that I de-stress is by cooking. Another is eating, which dovetails nicely. One of my favorite things to eat is pizza. None of this wimpy New York-style thin crust pizza for me-I’m from Chicago, and was raised on Uno and Due, Giordano’s, Lou Malnati’s-by now you get the picture. We’re talking about deep-dish pizza here.

It takes five or six hours for me to make a pie. A good portion of that time is spent waiting for the dough to rise. My dough gets the triple treatment-it rises thrice before being used. That way it gets nice and light, rises beautifully when cooked, and cooks evenly.

I use variations on this recipe:

Ingredients:

* 1/4 ounce active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsps)
* 1 1/4 cups lukewarm water
* 1 teaspoon sugar
* 3 1/4 cups unbleached bread flour, plus more for dusting
* 1/2 cup medium-grind yellow cornmeal
* 1 teaspoon table salt or 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
* 1 stick butter (unsalted)
* 1/2 cup olive oil, plus
* more olive oil, for oiling bowl and pan

Preparation:

1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in 1/4 cup of the warm water. Add the sugar and 1/4 cup of the flour and stir to combine.
2. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1/2 hour.
3. Melt the butter over low heat.
4. Add the remaining 1 cup warm water and 3 cups flour, the cornmeal, salt, and 1/2 cup olive oil.
5. Using a wooden spoon, mix the dough, incorporating as much of the flour as possible.
6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until soft and elastic.
7. Add only a small amount of flour to the work surface to keep the dough from sticking.
8. Lightly oil a large bowl. Add the dough and turn to coat on all sides.
9. Cover the bowl with a clean, damp, kitchen towel or damp paper towel.
10. Set the bowl in a warm spot and let rise until doubled in volume, 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
11. When the dough has doubled in volume, punch it down and knead it for 2 to 3 minutes. Repeat rising procedure.
12. Press the dough evenly into the bottom of an oiled 14-inch round deep-dish pizza pan.
12. Let the dough rise in the pan for 15 to 20 minutes.
13. Add filling.

The dough looks like this when loaded into the pan (I use a springform cheesecake pan):

I punch down the dough a bit, and shape the sides before adding any of the fillings. The first thing added is the cheese. Shredded mozzarella, one cup, plus a couple of ounces of smoked mozzarella for some extra taste. This time around, I’m making spinach, mushroom, and bacon pizza. That filling goes on top of the cheese, and looks something like this:

I sprinkled some julienned onion and multicolored peppers on top of that, plus another 2 ounces of cheese:

And then the whole thing gets sauced:

Then finally seasoned, with some parsley, oregano, red pepper flakes, and parmesan cheese, ready for the oven:

500 degrees, for 20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown, and I end up with something like this:

I’d show you pics of the slices but I’m HUNGRY!

I’m no longer a wiki virgin. My first post to survive the process unedited describes the Epoch sf anthology, published in 1975. Now that I understand how the process works, there’ll likely be more articles. I won’t write about them all, I promise;)

I’m hoping to hear some good news about a job, having applied for many more this week, and having had two interviews, which brings my grand total to eight (out of just under 800 applications). There are more jobs advertised the last month or so, and many of the employers have actually written back, which is a positive sign. I appreciate good manners even if they’re not offering employment.

Lots of scammers out there, though. I keep getting come-ons from an outfit called Career Network, who want me to participate in some kind of conference call (on my dime) while watching some webathon. Feel free to Google them-they’re notorious. I don’t believe there are legitimate work-at-home jobs anymore. Most of them seem to be attempts at get money and info…those that at first appear to have legitimacy, like some of the writing/translating sites, have so much chaff that one can’t find the wheat. The “employers” seem to want unrealistic production for peanuts, and are largely from non-English-speaking countries.

During my copious spare time, I’ve been editing some of my older novels, trying to get them in shape for shopping. I’m a little disappointed in most of them-not severely, mind you, but a little. Too much topicality, which makes for hard edits. Last year’s NaNonovel Milk, though, that’s coming along nicely. I may actually do a rare (for me) second draft, after finishing the first draft of Fallen Earring, which will appear here as a blognovel.

This year’s NaNonovel Carcosa has hit a wall at @375k. I don’t know which of the thousands of dangling plot-threads to pick up at this point, since most of the thing will have to be excised…my inner editor has kicked in, and the project has ground to a halt, for now. Might end up cannibalized, I dunno yet. Quite an experiment though-a long, virtually actionless novel with an unreliable sessile narrator, in an environment which approaches absolute zero and absolute darkness. Can’t really say it’s been FUN to write, but it’s been an experience I wouldn’t trade.

Everything hinges on the job front. If I find work, keep a roof over all of our heads, etc., then everything else falls into place. I have the writing bug and can crank stuff out, but the stress level right now is stultifying. I feel creative enough, but that energy is necessarily pointed in a direction other than writing. Drained some of it for the RPM Challenge, which I have just about wrapped up. I just need to do a few vocal tracks, write one set of lyrics, and I’m done. If I don’t do those, I have more than enough material to do the album as an instrumental.

Hoping for good news. Everything is crossed, and it’s starting to feel uncomfortable.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, I should meet the RPM Challenge with room to spare. The challenge asks for 35 minutes worth of original music, and I’m already past that. I’m shooting for the full 70 or so minutes that make up a modern cd.
I’m using Band in a Box to compose things, for the most part, and then replacing some of the midi files with live instruments, edited piano rolls, loops, whatever seems to fit.
Right now I have an intro, space/classical/prog in nature, that’s @eight minutes long, and barring any additions from a potential collaborator is mixed, mastered, and ready to roll. Sonic Dave says it’s Genesis-esque and might try to layer some pads onto it.
The second track has some problems and is in the process of being reworked. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll make something else. I need it to be in a certain key and style to fit the general theme and can always do an Iommi-ish short guitar piece.
The third track is in the vein of my recent track Floydian Slip, using the same combination of instruments as that track. It needs a little more work and perhaps a new bass track, but I could let it go as is and that’d be okay. None of these three tracks have any more than a working title at present. Eight minutes long, more or less.
The slide guitar sequence from the third track leads directly into the track I worked out last night, called Arizona. The instrumental portions are done…I’m trying to fit some lyrics into it and will then do some vocals. It’s got a little bit of pedal steel that I synthesized from a couple of BiaB parts and a simple progression made of cowboy chords. It sounds more or less like an Eagles tune. It’s about six minutes.
After that I have a hard rock piece, with some loud electric guitars, a bit more uptempo than the rest. I’m not happy with it, though I need something of that nature for the dynamics, and may well write another one to fit. That’s also between five and six minutes long, and that’s thirty-five minutes right there, if I don’t go any further.
There’s likely to be a few more tracks before I get to the coda, which has some of the same chord progressions as the intro, though in a different key. That’s a ten-minute workout, with a lot of different instruments playing the same sequences for maximum tonal density. Has a nice lead part that I fashioned by sequencing a guitar line and then monkeying with the piano roll editor, and (I think) a good repeating progression, with some small variations.
I’m using some of my newer toys for these tracks…my Korg mini-midi keyboard, my Casio 61-key, and my Jay Turser hollowbody bass. The Ovation is the main axe as there are a lot of acoustic parts, and the Ibanez solidbody for leads. I haven’t been playing much these last few months, and my fingers are a little clumsier than I’d like-it’s taking multiple takes to get something decent.
So far so good, though. I’m pleased with the genre-hopping and the overall sound, am hoping to do more than one vocal track, maybe a cover, maybe one of my older tunes that hasn’t been recorded…and I’m practicing scales every night while everyone else is asleep, trying to have some semblance of dexterity.
Once the thing is done, I’ll go back to my “covers” album and get cracking on the rest of Children of the Atom, which I’ll have to re-do as a good portion of it is on a hard drive that I can’t access because my external enclosures both gave up the ghost (before I could get them backed up). Can’t afford new ones right now, and that’s the only loss besides some vsts, which can be replaced when I need them. Since I have 2 1/2 Tb of memory on this system, there’s no need.
